The book of Matthew, Chapter 9 unfolds the vision Jesus had for HIS backyard. The first verse states that “Jesus climbed into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town. In between the first verse and the last, Jesus performed many miracles, gave hope to the hopeless, and transformed hearts."

The last verse contains the vision Jesus had in his own town as it reads in Matthew 9:36-38, “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

If Jesus’s backyard was a great harvest then, how much more is ours now?

Turn the page to Matthew Chapter 10 and you find his response to what he saw. Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, but only to the people of Israel-God’s lost sheep.”

As Jesus was moved by compassion for His people, we are moved by the same compassion for ours.
